In-Store Purchases Lead to Big Savings on Fuel for Rutter’s Rewards Customers.

Benjamin Franklin was on to something when he wrote that nothing is certain except death and taxes. But then again, Ben was looking at life from the 1789 perspective. He never had to drop off two kids at school, rush to a hot yoga class, and log in to pay the cable bill. All before getting to work at 9 a.m.

If Ben were around today, the former Pennsylvania governor would probably Snapchat his BFF and say nothing is certain except needing to fill the tank on the SUV and find a good cup of coffee.

With that modern reality, Mr. “A Penny Saved is a Penny Earned” would appreciate the rewards program from Rutter’s Farm Stores. Customers who register for Rutter’s Rewards save three cents per gallon on fuel every day, and can earn bigger per-gallon discounts by purchasing any of more than 1,700 items throughout the store – including coffee.

How it Works

rutters cents offInside every Rutter’s store, a display icon marked with “cents-off” rewards indicates which merchandise is a qualifying item. They can be found at the deli, in the refrigerated case, and on shelves. When a customer purchases a qualifying item, they earn cents- off gas rewards that can be redeemed at the pump.

One example listed on the Rutter’s Rewards website is that if you bought a Rutter’s breakfast sandwich and a cup of coffee every day on your way to work, by the end of the week you could have earned ten cents off per gallon on your next fill-up. When you consider that there are close to 2,000 store items in the rewards program, the gas savings can be pretty significant.

As with any rewards program, the key is to register the card as soon as possible – and to use it. That might seem obvious, but you would be surprised how many people sign up for these programs and then never remember to pull that card out of their wallet or console.

To underscore the importance of keeping the card with you, it’s worth mentioning that the Rutter’s Rewards system can’t access your account without the card. No matter how charming and witty you are standing there at the counter with your sub and fountain drink, you won’t convince the clerk to work around the system by using your phone number. It’s just not possible.

A Keystone State Original

Based in York, Pennsylvania, Rutter’s Farm Stores opened in 1967 as sales channel for Rutter’s Dairy products. Today, Rutter’s Farm Stores has more than 60 stores in the region, including York, Lancaster, Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin and Franklin counties.

The latest trend for Rutter’s is to build superstores with a large deli that sells sandwiches, wraps, fajitas, strombolis, Asian food, and deep-fried selections. A lot of the food is prepared on-site using fresh ingredients. They even bake their own bread, cookies and muffins every day.  Many locations have cafe seating, and most have free Wi-Fi.

As a bonus for customers who need a little cash, Rutter’s offers surcharge-free ATMs inside their stores. That is good news for anyone who isn’t near a branch of their own bank.

Growth and Innovation

In August, Rutter’s Farm Stores held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for store No. 60 in Middletown, Pennsylvania. The 6,000-square-foot location is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It includes 12 fueling spaces and four high-speed truck diesel-fueling spaces.

In addition to the food, gourmet coffee bar and free Wi-Fi that Rutter’s is known for, the new store features USB charging stations and comfortable seating for more than 20 people.

Always on the cutting edge, Rutter’s developed a mobile app that was named Best Mobile Application at the Customer Engagement Awards held during the National Retail Federation’s (NRF) annual convention in 2012. The app provides gas-prices, special deals and games to Android, iPhone and Blackberry users.

Customers can register their Rutter’s Rewards loyalty cards using the app, and manage the account from their smart phone.

Along with to the loyalty card, Rutter’s is implementing other programs and contests to reward customers. During this year’s Summer of Freedom sweepstakes, four lucky customers experienced what could be the ultimate win for drivers who spend a lot of time behind the wheel: free gas for a year. Shoppers entered by purchasing any of the store’s Summer Freedom items, which were marked with a special star. They earned one entry into the drawing for each featured item purchased.

There were thousands of other opportunities to win things such as coffee for a year, professional baseball tickets, concert tickets, fuel discounts, free food, and merchandise from Rutter’s stores.

Rutter’s offers plenty of reasons for customers to keep coming back. So if you live in south-central Pennsylvania and don’t already have a Rutter’s Rewards card, you might want to think about another Ben Franklin quote: “Never leave till tomorrow that which you can do today.” Because there’s no time like the present to start saving.
