Maverik is the First Stop for Adventure – and Savings

Maverik started in 1928 as a two-pump gas station in tiny Afton, Wyoming. Founder Reuel Call funded his start-up with the money he earned renting roller skates to customers in dance halls.

Clearly Mr. Call was a daring man, so it fits that what started as Maverik Country Stores evolved into a chain called Maverik: Adventure’s First Stop. With more than 260 stores across 10 Western states, Maverik is the place for people who need to get hooked up for their adventure.

Drivers and shoppers out West know Maverik for its “Bon Fire” branded foods, made fresh on-site every day. The Bon Fire lineup includes Bundle sandwiches, cinnamon rolls, breakfast sandwiches, burritos and hoagies. Other branded products include Glacier X Sports Drink, Mt. Avalanche frozen yogurt, and Bodacious Bean coffee

With so many locations and a reputation for high-quality food, Maverik has a lot of loyal fans throughout the Western United States. The company recognizes those customers with a multi-tiered rewards program called the Maverik Adventure Club.

 

Fuel Savings at the Forefront

maverick loyalty programAfter registering through the Maverik website [https://rewards.maverik.com] or mobile app, customers can earn fuel discounts and all kinds of freebies. Members choose between the basic Adventure Club card and Adventure Club Nitro, which is a premium program. To receive instant fuel discounts or earn “Trail Points,” they simply show a membership card or enter their phone number when making a purchase.

With the Adventure Club card, Maverik offers an instant saving of 1/50th of a dollar on every gallon of fuel. That’s 2 cents per gallon in grown-up terms.

I’ve been helping my sixth-grade son with fractions over the past few weeks. So I’m kind of wired that way right now.

Along with the fuel savings, Maverik gives Trail Points for every purchase. That’s when the magic happens. Customers can spend points through the website or earn products through the virtual punch-card program, known as “Punch It!”

During Adventure Club card activation, members create a 10-digit alternate ID that allows them to take advantage of the fuel savings and also capture trail points. That’s an important step because the alternate ID makes it possible to take advantage of the offers even if you accidentally leave the card at home in your Dora the Explorer backpack.

The Adventure Club Nitro Card is tied directly to the customer’s checking account. It is not a credit card – the Nitro Card debits funds from the checking account for purchases at Maverik. There are no sign-up fees and no credit check.

Fuel savings at Maverik triple from 2 to 6 cents per gallon when customers pay with an Adventure Club Nitro card. Other store purchases earn double the standard number of points. Trail Points are tripled for eligible purchases every Tuesday.

Trail Points
Trail Points add up quickly, because Maverik gives one point for every gallon of fuel, as well as for every dollar spent inside the store. Customers earn extra points on special items with higher point values.

Customers get triple points on Tuesdays. And those with the Adventure Club Nitro card enjoy double Trail Points on the other six days of the week.

After members rack up knapsack full of Trail Points, they can spend them through the Maverik website or mobile app and qualify to win things such as cars, trips and adventure gear. They also can buy Maverik gift cards and merchandise, or donate points to a charity or school.

Punch cards are a great concept.
Get X number of punches from your favorite sandwich joint, car wash or fro-yo shack, and you get something for free. The problem is that you need to have a card with you at the time of purchase. Collect enough of those cards and you end up sitting lopsided because on top of your George Costanza wallet.

Enter Maverik with the solution: A virtual punch-card program called Punch-It!

Customers access their account through the website or app to select Punch-It! cards. Then they get the perks of paper punch cards without the hassle of keeping track of them. Points add up in the system, and progress is shown on the bottom of receipts as well as online and in the app.

 

Matching the Competition
Maverik takes the hassle out of comparing prices at every pump in town. Adventure Club Nitro Members get peace of mind thanks to Maverik’s competitive price match. If a qualified competitor in the customer’s area has fuel priced lower than the 6-cent Nitro card discount, Maverik will automatically match the competitor’s price.

The competitive price match program includes some fine print that excludes special pricing from gas stations that require membership fees or are not available to the general public. But overall, the Adventure Club Nitro Card ensures the best price on a fill-up in markets where Maverik operates.

Our research indicates that rocket-grade nitrous oxide fuel blends aren’t yet available at Maverik. So if you are a billionaire entrepreneur with a flowing lion’s mane of hair who wants to launch out of Pocatello, Idaho, then this might not be the right program for you.

Maverik is creating an awesome experience for customers out West, and the industry is noticing. Last year the trade magazine “Convenience Store Decisions selected Maverik as their 2013 Chain of the Year. The company’s focus on customer satisfaction through its “adventure first” culture seems to be paying off.
